We have intuited this program in February 2019 thanks to a grant by the Creative Waikato. This year we are fortunate to get the help from Nissanka Weerakoon who studied Kandyan dancing under Peter Surasena Gurunnanse, a renowned master of Kandyan Dance in Sri Lanka. Surasena Gurunnanse performed in the Kandy Perahara for 50 years, showcased Sri Lankan dance overseas and has received the ‘Narthana Thilaka’ award among many others for his contribution to dance and culture in Sri Lanka. Nissanka was fortunate to graduate as a ‘Ves’ Dancer under his tutelage in 2010.

Under the first 10-week long program around 25 children aged between 10-18 were able to train under Nissanka. We intend to continue this program in years to come and already we have secured funding from Creative Waikato for the next year’s program.
