Sri Lankan traditional dancing is a vibrant and expressive art form that reflects the island’s rich cultural heritage. Accompanied by traditional drums like the Geta Beraya, Sri Lankan traditional dance is not just entertainment but a form of spiritual and communal expression that continues to be preserved and celebrated in festivals and cultural events across the country.
We are blessed to be able to bring this tradition to the youth in Hamilton. Running for just over five years, these classes offer an excellent opportunity for youth to develop their skills in Sri Lankan traditional dance and connect more deeply with their cultural roots. Dedicated and highly skilled traditional dancers from our community dedicate their time and expertise to pass on this art form.
In addition, dancers are given the valuable opportunity to perform at significant cultural events, including the Indigo Festival, Waikato Multicultural Day, Katina ceremonies, and the annual Sri Lankan Cultural Show. These events provide a platform for students to display their hard work and talent in front of large, appreciative audiences. Beyond performance experience, these events cultivate a sense of pride and connection to Sri Lankan heritage, allowing young dancers to actively participate in the celebration and continuation of their cultural traditions.
This is a valuable opportunity for children to develop their skills and engage with their cultural heritage, especially as the programme is designed to run alongside the school term, allowing for a balanced academic and extracurricular life.
